ITC504 - Interface Useability - Assignment 3

Assessment item 3 - Peer review and Usability Evaluation

1.    Peer review of the design

In order to clearly understand the interface designing and to evaluate a designing, the following peer review will be highly helpful. The following sections will discuss in understanding the peer review for the design that have been provided.

1. Design Review

An interface designing is the concept of designing the front end interface of the either mobile or a web application. The interface design has been designed for Hotel booker application and has contained various features and functionalities that will be based on the requirements of the customer. The design has to be effectively made in order to make the proper communication between the user and the machine. On reviewing the given design, there are several aspects have to be noted. They are in terms of customer requirements, design aspects. Principles of design, etc.

Figure 1. Design overview with hotel page.

The following are some of the main and most important reviews that are to be considered from reviewing the design.

·         The hotel booker application has been designed based on the mobile phone application which may be looking in portrait mode (Maziar Seraj, 2012).

·         The use of mobile phone size is not good as the length of the mobile phone and width should be watched while designing the interface.

·         This is because of the reason this should be properly matching the mobile phones in terms of screen size and the screen ratio.

The use of background colors is mild and there are no images that are shown in any part of the interface design. In order to make a design better, the use of formal colors and the images is highly necessary. The use of the features and the functions have been good and are satisfying the better navigation between the web pages. There are icons and the buttons that will be highly useful in navigating and easily moving through the pages.

2.     Satisfying the Case Study requirements

One of the most important thing that has to be satisfied in the interface design is the customer satisfaction. This is due to that the customer or the client may be requiring the design based on their customers or users who will be using the application. The features and the functions of the design should be based on the customer requirements since the customer may be requiring it based on the user needs. The case study has been properly studied and have considered all of the design and the features that are required by the customers. In order to effectively design the mobile application, this is highly essential. The challenges here is to make improvements and updates to the design with the permission from the customer.

·         For the security reason, the customer has asked for login and logout features which has been designed in order to provide the authentication to the application.

·         In addition to that the registration has been designed so that the new customers can register and can login to the mobile application.

·         The other details that has been designed in the mobile application are search for the hotel with the help of the location.

·         The search option should be based on filtering with the star rating, number of guests, number of rooms, number of bathrooms and the inclusion of breakfast in the hotel.

·         The order or the sorting facilities that are required by customer in the price, rating and the popularity have been effectively design so that customer can sort based on the requirements.

·         For the payments, there should be options that are available like credit card, bank deposit and PayPal.

·         While the guest staying at the hotel, the customer can order room services, room cleaning, massage therapy, other health therapies, book seating in the hotel restaurant and the other tourist requirements with the help of the mobile application.

Thus, each of the requirements that are needed by the customer has been fulfilled by the interface design that has been made.

3.     Design understanding and Aesthetic

The design that been given for the peer review has been highly aesthetic. The core design principles that are required for designing has been effectively used in order to effectively design the interface. For clearly understanding the design and the aesthetics the following image will be helpful.

Figure 3. Use of visibility principle

From the above design there are several understandings that has been made regarding the aesthetics and the design principles. The design principles that has been used for the designing is the Jakob Nielsen’s 10 principles (Jakob Nielsen, 1994).

On satisfying these principles the design can be effectively made. The visibility of the system has been made clear and each and every features and functions that are provided are clear. Understanding the design does not have any issues and hence there design follows other design principles like user control and freedom, standards and the consistency, preventing from the errors, recognition rather than recall and the flexibility. But there are several challenges that are available while designing with the help of the principles as each and every of these principles has to be effectively followed. The challenges should overcome with the help of clearly understanding the customer requirements at the very initial stage of the designing of the interface for the mobile application of Hotel booker.

4.     Reasons for improvements in design

Figure 4. Mockup without images

There are several reasons for the improvement of the design that has been provided for the review and this is because of the following.

·        A design that is developed should be following almost all of the principles that are used for designing. Any issues in the application could be avoided once when the design is made as per the principles (Mirkowicz & Grzegorz Grodner, 2018).

·        For overcoming the interface and communication issues, the design principles should be followed and the changes should be made in the design.

·        The improvements that are made in the application will be helpful in overcoming the decisions that can handle the customer requirements.

·        The complete application should have to look formal and hence several improvements that are required should be done with the help of designing principles.

·        The improvements are always an essential part of the interface designing and hence can be helpful in making the effective design.

5.     Recommendations for improvement

It has been clearly understood that several challenges should be made while implementing the improvements and the suggestions in the design. The design should not be completely changed since this might take several time and waste of the use of resources. Thus, the following are recommendations that can be implemented in the design with ease and in the lesser time in order to effectively improve the design.

·         The size of the screen for mobile application should be verified and it should be made as per the standard. This looks awkward as the design looks square in size. The screen ratio should be identified and use that fixed size (Radka Nacheva, 2015).

·         The help and the documentation is highly essential in a website since the new users can easily understand the design and the system with the help of it. Thus help icon or button should be located in every web pages of the design.

·         The images should be added in order to make the design more aesthetic. This could be helpful in attracting the customer since the graphical tools are more powerful that the content in the webpages.

·         The challenges in navigation should be overcome with the help of buttons, icons and the text links that are available. To improve the navigation using the menu bar or the breadcrumb with which the navigation is made very simpler.

·         The color of the web pages should be made clear and formal. Any web page should be looking formal in order to make it clear and will not look clumsy. The formal and pale colors or the images should be added in the background of the web pages.

·         The challenges that are identified in the functions and the features should also be identified and they have to be rectified to work with the system properly.
